My favourite go-to wine – Pirramimma Petit Verdot

Back on My Wine Playlist with my favourite go-to wine šŸ· theĀ Pirramimma Petit Verdot. Pirramimma was my introduction to Australia’s McLaren Vale wines, and the reason I have a fondness for the wines of this region.Ā

When I try to explain my wine palate – the wines I enjoy – I lean to the big, fruity, smooth Pirramimma reds. I appreciate both the Pirramimma Shiraz and the Petit Verdot. The Petit Verdot has a smoky fruity cigar on the nose, fruit-forward black fruit, cherry and oak on the palate and a smooth lingering finish. It just feels right. There’s a comfort, and confidence, in knowing this is the perfect wine for any mood and any occasion.Ā

What is Petit Verdot?

Petit Verdot means ā€œsmall greenā€

A variety that is used, when it ripens, in Bordeaux blends to give structure – adding tannin, colour and flavour. The name Petit Verdot ā€œsmall greenā€ refers to one of the main problems with the grape in that it is late ripening and often too late for the Bordeaux climate. It appears to ripen more reliably in other regions, like McLaren Vale in Australia, where Pirramimma has championed the approach of Petit Verdot as a single varietal wine that will age for several years.

Three generations after Alexander Campbell Johnston planted his first small vine cutting in 1892 in the McLaren Vale soil establishing the family-owned Pirramimma, his grandson, Geoff Johnston, took a chance on planting Petit Verdot. Pirramimma was the first grower and maker of 100% Petit Verdot in Australia. Today the Johnston family continues to produce some of the most famous, award-winning wines in Australia.

Making wines that range from traditional to innovative, Pirramimma is pure McLaren Vale. – James Halliday, Australian wine writer and critic

I highly recommend adding this wine to your personal wine playlist. I can guarantee that this fabulous wine always impresses as a bottle to gift, or to share. The Pirramimma Petit Verdot pairs awesomely well with bbq steak, roasted meats, my favourite flatbread pizzas, and friends, of course!

And even more fabulous is the story behind the name. Pirramimma is an Aboriginal phrase meaning ā€˜the moon and the stars’. āļøšŸŒ™šŸŒ•šŸŒŸ

Now I love it even more… with my heart and my palate.Ā
